Tips for a healthy heart

As the days are beginning to draw out and that glimmer of lighter mornings and evenings are round the corner I thought I would focus on your heart health. Small changes can give big wins.

Keep active : Aim when you are able to do 10,000 steps each day. It's surprising how a couple of hours walking will help you achieve this. Activity, particularly cardio keeps the blood flowing and improves your circulation.

Fibre: 30g of fibre a day is what we should be aiming for as this can reduce our cholesterol and keeps our circulatory system healthy. That's half a cup of rolled oats, 6 servings of vegetables and fruit, a cup of lentils and some pulses.

Hydration: water /herbal teas are so important for a healthy heart as this can help reduce our blood pressure.

Know your blood pressure: ideally the target is 135/85 but this will vary. A blood pressure consistently higher than 140/90 needs some attention.

A great food for blood pressure is beetroot. It's rich in nitric oxide which relaxes our circulatory system thus reduces blood pressure.

Try this Roasted beetroot and parsnip winter salad

It's been a busy start to the year as I have had a lot of new clients that I've seen either at my clinic or online. Helping them address their health concerns and then finding solutions and ways for their health to improve and flourish again makes it so worthwhile and rewarding.

Quite a few of my existing clients are now on the monthly maintenance package which focuses on one goal per month and is great when you want that accountability.

Please share my details with anyone you think may benefit and thank you for your support.

Have a healthy and happy February
